History of the organisation
ZARRSO was established by Zambian authors and publishers after a long preparatory period through an interim working committee. The founding members are the Book Publishers Association of Zambia (BPAZ); Zambia Women Writers Association (ZAWWA); Zambia Educational Publishing House (ZEPH); Macmillan Zambia; University of Zambia Press (UNZA Press); Visual Arts Council of Zambia (VAC); and Zambia Music Copyright Protection Society (ZAMCOPS).

Remarks about the Board
The board chairperson, vice chairperson and five other members are elected from among the general membership every two years and cannot serve for two terms consecutively. Two other members are co opted being a representative of the government supervisory body and the general manager of the music collecting society

ZARRSO admits members both individually and through rights holder groups. The current membership is not fully representative of other categories eligible for membership such as journalists, visual artists and song writers.

Remarks about staff
ZARRSO is run by the Chief Executive Officer who is employed by the board. The CEO currently is in charge of employing other staff at secretariat. Presently secretariat has four other staff being an accounts and administrative officer, two licensing officers and an office assistant.

New developments / surveys and statistics
ZARRSO has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Central Statistics office of Zambia which will be conducting the first survey to establish the extent of reproduction in Zambia. The survey is expected to be concluded by June, 2017 and a study report will be available then.
New developments / licensing
ZARRSO has licensed 4 private universities, 41 schools and 61 copy shops since licensing begun in 2016. In 2017 ZARRSO also signed a licensing agreement with the Ministry of Higher Education to cover reproductions in all public higher learning institutions, however payments have not yet started being collected on this agreement.
Other new areas of development
ZARRSO facilitated the formation of a communal secretariat for rightsholder organisations in an effort to strengthen its mandate. ZARRSO also assisted in the formation of an academic and non fiction authors association from whom a mandated is expected to be given to ZARRSO.
