On 8 March 2019, IFRRO visited the Copyright Society of Zanzibar and also met with the CMO and with Government representatives.

Zanzibar is a semi-autonomous region within the United Republic of Tanzania. Copyright is one of the areas in which Zanzibar has autonomy, therefore Zanzibar has its own Copyright Act and its own Copyright Office and multipurpose CMO, the Copyright Society of Zanzibar (COSOZA).

IFRRO has worked with COSOZA for many years. In 2016 COSOZA attended the meeting of IFRRO’s African Development Committee and in 2017 IFRRO was represented by Mr. Rosario Kamanga of COSOMA at a WIPO workshop held in Zanzibar.

It is in this context that Pierre-Olivier Lesburguères, IFRRO’s Manager for Policy and Regional Development, visited COSOZA on 8 March. He met with the Copyright Administrator and CEO of COSOZA, Ms Mtumwa Ameir, and with COSOZA’s Senior Documentation Officer who is also in charge of reprography, Ms Zaituni Amour. A large stakeholder meeting was convened and chaired by the Deputy Principal Secretary of the Ministry of Youth, Culture, Arts and Sports of Zanzibar, Mr Amour Hamil Bakari, with participation of the Zanzibar State University and other educational institutions. Mr Amour Hamil Bakari expressed his strong support to COSOZA and commitment to see the collective management of reprography being successfully introduced in Zanzibar.

IFRRO looks forward to deepening the cooperation with COSOZA and with the Zanzibar authorities and rightholders.
