All education institutions: 9,623 schools (2,694 non government, 6,929 government), 5 school groups, 742 independent colleges, 32 TAFEs, 9 adult education colleges, 39 universities. Also licences for 536 government departments, as well as licences for corporations, associations, religious organisations, press clipping services, document delivery services, and institutions assisting the disabled. Digital Licences Types of works licensed: Literary, artistic and dramatic works, including extracts from books, journals and newspaper articles Types of uses licensed (including, where applicable, course packs,document delivery and storage): Course packs, university and school intranets and other digital uses in the education sector in reliance on the statutory licence. Voluntary digital schemes include aggregated journals for subscription and transactional use; intranet, internal email, scanning and storage in corproate sector; scanning and emailing press clips and downstream press clip use. CAL uses Electronic Use Surveys to estimate volumes and types of works used digitally. The results of these surveys are used to calculate licence fees and distribution allocations. Types of institutions/sectors licensed: Statutory: Digital reproduction and communication in education sector. Restricted mandate for government use which does include digital copying.
Intranet, internal email, scanning and archival storage of works in the corporate sector; digital press clipping including downstream use in corporate sector and by government departments; and online journal aggregators.
Pilot Projects: Australian Poetry Resources Internet Library (APRIL)
With the University of Sydney, CAL is developing a website and database to support digital trade of tailored anthologies and individual poems, podcasts of readings, interviews and associated material.
Classic Australian Works (CAW)
A print on demand service for out of print and culturally significant Australian works which was initially launched in 2003 with 25 titles. CAW is being enhanced - with new editions of the works being produced which will include scholarly introductions by literary experts, as well as expanding the repertoire of works available. The works are also available for digital supply, in addition to the print on demand model.
